Picture follows.
It shows a certain contrast in the world, a usage of a specific quantity across the world. Every country (almost), save Liberia, the United States (and its territories) and maybe some Pacific Islands use this quantity X.
But the USA, being the USA, prefers Y.
Due to this rationale, saying a 100 X in any country is impractical but saying a 100 Y in the USA would just be another day maybe in Hyderabad or Chennai.
The United Kingdom, however, prefers using X but then when it exceeds 95, reporters prefer using Y to signify larger quantity and hence put emphasis on the large number.
X? Y? What do they both do?
celsius, fahrenheit, temperature
