Griswold Lorillard was the owner of a large tobacco company in the USA and owned several properties off New York.
In 1886, when he was invited to a ball, Mr. Lorillard and his friends made a new appearance that impressed most of the men around there, who decided to later mimic his style.
When asked for the reason behind such modifications in outfit, he said the tail of his suit often interfered with sitting and dancing.
Lorillard basically wore a formal evening suit, traditionally black or midnight blue, consisting of a jacket with satin or grosgrain lapels and matching trousers, a formal shirt, a bow tie, and often a cummerbund or vest.

What do we know this "Lorillard Outfit" as today, named simply after the club he was invited to?
