question of the day

The concept of the curve was first unveiled in a 2012 address by Alan Krueger, then chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, and featured in the President’s Economic Report to Congress. It drew on research by labor economist Miles Corak.

This curve illustrates "intergenerational income elasticity," which measures the probability that an individual will maintain their parents' relative income ranking.

It compares income mobility and inequality across the United States and various other nations.

The curve’s name is inspired by the novel "x" (and in 2013 subsequently a movie starring dicaprio) where the main character, born into modest circumstances, ascends to the affluent society of Long Island’s north shore.
