Question of the Day

This is a beautiful song by Leonard Cohen called X, which literally translates to "praise the lord"

"Leonard Norman Cohen CC GOQ (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016) was a Canadian songwriter, singer, poet, and novelist. Themes commonly explored throughout his work include faith and mortality, isolation and depression, betrayal and redemption, social and political conflict, sexual and romantic love, desire, regret, and loss."

"Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor falls, the major lifts
The baffled king composing X

X, X
X, X

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair

And from your lips she drew the X
X, X
X, X"

The lines refer to the Biblical image of King David as a gifted musician whose music brought him close to God.

The “secret chord” is not meant as a literal hidden note. It represents a moment of deep emotional or spiritual insight. The narrator then turns to the person he is addressing and points out that this person is not moved by such things, showing that this said person is maybe stoic?

When the song describes the fourth, the fifth, the minor falling and the major rising, it shows sadness becoming light and joy, when the words X are uttered.

The “baffled king” is David again.

He is gifted yet confused by his own feelings and the power of desire.

The passage as a whole says that even someone powerful and spiritually connected can be overwhelmed by emotion, while the person being addressed seems unmoved.

This first stanza of the song beautifully juxtaposes these two men, but at the end, connects them with a universal feeling, that across life's mess there exists an eternal joy - X?

What, most commonly used phrase amongst christians, is X?
